CCI Announces New Board Leadership to Steer Future Initiatives

DENVER, CO (December 10, 2012) — The Competency and Credentialing Institute (CCI) has announced the results of its 2012 Board of Directors elections. The next generation of volunteer leaders, who will help guide the organization’s future initiatives, includes Debra Dunn, MBA, MSN, RN, CNOR and Marie Paulson, BSN, MS, RN, CNOR. Dunn and Paulson were elected by their fellow certificants in the CCI community through the formal election process conducted in October 2012.

Shannon Carter, MA, CAE, Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of CCI, looks forward to the upcoming term with these perioperative nursing leaders.  “CCI has a tradition of being led by committed and passionate perioperative nurses.  Our new Board members continue that rich history,” says Carter.

Dunn has been a CNOR for 16 years and currently works as the Perioperative Nurse Manager at East Orange General Hospital in East Orange, NJ.  She has been a CCI volunteer on several CNOR test development committees. Dunn believes that certification fosters a sense of pride and validation for perioperative nurses, and is, thus, looking forward to joining the Board and being a part of CCI’s strategic objectives.

Paulson is the Regional Perioperative Director for Kaiser Permanente Foundation Hospitals in Pasadena, CA. She has been CNOR certified for 23 years.  Her commitment to championing patient safety through certification throughout the southern California Kaiser health system inspired her to seek a place on the CCI Board of Directors. Paulson has worked with CCI several times over the years as a CNOR test development committee member, as well as a proponent of CCI’s Certificate Program for Surgical Services Management.

Current CCI Board President, Pamela D. Gorgone, MS, RN, CNOR, CPN, also is encouraged to work with the newest members of the Board. Gorgone states, “Our new members are extremely knowledgeable and have extensive professional perioperative backgrounds.  We can certainly use their expertise on the exciting initiatives in CCI’s near future.”

The new directors and officers will begin their service following the AORN Congress, March 2 – 7, 2013 in San Diego, CA. They will join current Board members Joyce Cox, MSN, CNP, CNOR, CRNFA, OCN, Ted Walker, MSN, RN, A-CNS, BC, CNOR, CPPS, Karen White-Edwards, MBA, BSN, RN, CNOR, Michael Villaire, MSLM, Fran Skupski, MBA, BSN, CNOR, and Julie Thompson, PhD, RN, CNS, CIP, CNOR.

CCI is the leading provider of certification, competency assessment and competency-based education to perioperative registered nurses. Established in 1979, CCI provides the CNOR and CRNFA credentials to more than 33,000 registered nurses, making it one of the world’s largest specialty nursing credentialing bodies. With a diversified menu of products and services that includes research, education and assessment modules, CCI is a recognized leader in the credentialing community. CCI Board President, Joyce Cox, MBA, MSN, CNP, CNOR, CRNFA, OCN, was selected as one of two student commencement speakers at the University of Phoenix graduation that took place on May 18, 2013 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Cox completed her MBA with a 4.0 at the Columbus Campus and was asked to audition as a commencement speaker. Encouraged by her husband, she submitted her seven minute speech and was choosen.

"It was the opportunity of a lifetime," said Cox.

Cox was also inducted into the Delta Mu Delta Business Honor Society last fall. For this honor, she will address AD’s, Bachelor’s Degree students, Master’s and Doctorate students.

Finally, every biennium, at the Ohio Nurses Association Convention (Oct 2013), inductions into the Dorothy Cornelius Congress occur. Cox was nominated in October, 2011 and selected, thus will be inducted at the upcoming convention in Columbus, Ohio.

Cox remarked, "I was shocked and honored to be considered, let alone be chosen."

Dorothy Alice Cornelius was executive director of the Ohio Nurses Association from 1957 to 1983, president of the International Council of Nurses from 1973 to 1977, president of the American Nurses Association from 1968 to 1970, and president of the American Journal of Nursing Company – the largest publisher of nursing periodicals in the word – from 1967 to 1968.  She is the only person to have functioned in all of those positions. She believed that one nurse could make a difference, proving it through her own life’s work.

RN’s chosen for this award must demonstrate the following leadership characteristics:

  • Demonstrates the ability to motivate others through mentoring and collegial relationships
  • Thinks logically and creatively, analyzes problems and identifies strategies for solutions
  • Demonstrates caring attributes
  • Functions as an unofficial “Goodwill Ambassador” when patients and families are stressed, frustrated or fearful.

Congratulations, President Cox, on all of your outstanding accomplishments. We are proud to have you leading our Board of Directors.

DENVER, CO (July 15, 2013) – CCI’s Board of Directors have approved the Clinical Nurse Specialist – Certified Perioperative (CNS-CP) credential for the new Clinical Nurse Specialist Perioperative Certification Exam. The Board met this past weekend to approve the acronym and title as well as to review details of the CNS-CP credentialing program, including recommendations for recertification requirements and accompanying policies.

The purpose of the CNS-CP exam is to provide recognition for those CNS’s serving in an advanced practice perioperative specialty role and to validate perioperative competency at an advanced practice level. The exam will not confer initial licensure as an APRN.

The exam for masters’ prepared CNS’s is in the developmental stages and is expected to have its initial launch March 17 – April 16 at testing centers nationwide. The inaugural testing window comes with a discounted application price of $125.

To bring together the perioperative CNS community for this landmark initiative, CCI will host an exclusive testing location at the 61st Annual AORN Congress in Chicago, IL on Monday, March 31, 2014.

CCI needs the support of the entire perioperative CNS community to launch the exam. Individuals interested in taking the exam are encouraged to review the eligibility requirements and fill out the interest form. To facilitate preparation, CCI has provided the CNS-CP Task and Knowledge Statements. Please contact Julie Mower if you have any further questions regarding the CNS-CP Exam.

Ms. Berzins has also worked as a AAAHC surveyor, and is a member of APIC, AANN, AORN, and the patient safety coalition. North Meridian Surgery Center is an independent, physician-owned, outpatient pain and spine surgery center that has been open since 1993. In November 2011, the physicians moved into a new facility which Ms. Berzins helped design.

She held several leadership roles in perioperative services before moving into outpatient and ambulatory surgery. In addition to her work with Harmony Surgery Center, Ms. Craig served as president for the Colorado Ambulatory Surgery Center Association from 2004 to 2007 and currently continues to participate as a board member. Ms. Delahunty was instrumental in attracting the group to Heartland, as well as purchasing instruments, supplies and implants. Ms. Delahunty says the surgery center added a hand surgeon in 2011. Credential Falsification: A Matter We Take Seriously

Credential Falsification

Holding the CNOR, CRNFA, and CNS-CP credentials is a mark of excellence that perioperative nurses have earned through their hard work and commitment to the highest level of patient care. CCI always intends to protect the integrity and reputation of our credentials and the nurses who hold them. As such, we take credential falsification very seriously.

Here are a couple of common ways a nurse may misrepresent themselves as holding one of our credentials:

  • Listing credentials on your resume, business card, or email signature line that you have never held or have let lapse.
  • Falsifying a certificate or certification verification record in order to make it seem like you hold a certification that you do not.

In other words, if you’ve never held one of our credentials, or you have let one lapse, do not list them after your name under any circumstances. If you are caught doing so, CCI is required to investigate and take appropriate action. If falsification is determined, this could involve:

  • Reporting the falsification to the individual’s employer and state board of nursing.
  • Imposing a penalty that will not allow the individual to take the certification exam for a certain period of time.

Don’t jeopardize your reputation or career by misrepresenting yourself. If you have any questions, please contact us at 888-257-2667 or info@cc-institute.org.

AORN Chapter Uses CNOR Certification to Raise Funds

$

The number one reason OR nurses seek certification is due to a personal commitment to their nursing practice, as found in a recent survey conducted by CCI of its body of certified nurses.  Nurses also expressed that becoming CNOR certified validates their specialized perioperative nursing knowledge, skills and abilities.  CNOR certification is more popular than ever, with many hospitals working towards Magnet status or seeking to reap the many positive workforce and patient safety outcomes as a result of putting Magnet practices into action.

It is no secret that preparing for and taking the CNOR exam takes dedication and hard work. CCI has found that the average nurse studies for two to three months prior to taking the CNOR exam.  Along with the time it takes to study, there is also an undeniable financial commitment for many nurses.   Finding affordable ways to study for the exam proves challenging for some nurses, and facilities, with limited resources.

Pat Wallenborn, BSN, RN, a perioperative staff nurse at Mission Hospital in Asheville, NC, recently found a way to overcome these obstacles in two very beneficial ways.  After observing an increased interested in CNOR certification at local facilities, Wallenborn thought of a way to leverage the interest in certification and use it as a way to raise funds for her local AORN Chapter while helping to drive CNOR certification within her facility.

Wallenborn’s AORN Chapter, Western North Carolina (WNC) 3406, had little participation for many years.  A few years ago, a core group of members came together and very faithfully worked to increase attendance at Chapter meetings.  Since then, the Chapter has increased attendance from one to two individuals per meeting, to approximately 20 people per meeting.

“They key to the increased attendance was offering continuing education opportunities… and good food,” said Wallenborn.

The Chapter had begun to sponsor yearly educational seminars with various topics and speakers as a way to add value and to raise funds for the Chapter.  This year, Wallenborn, who is the current Chapter President, and other Chapter officers decided to explore the possibility of hosting a CNOR examination preparation course to serve as their Chapter fundraiser.

Coincidentally, Mission Hospital, Wallenborn’s facility, had started on the road to Magnet certification a few years ago.  New surgical services leadership within the facility, as well as the push to achieve Magnet status, had resulted in an increased interest in certification.

Wallenborn decided to merge the interest of her Chapter with the needs of her facility and found a way for the two to work together to co-host a “CNOR Exam Prep and Review Course”, which offered 15.8 CEs and was led by course facilitator Wendy Zander, MSN, RN, CNOR.

Zander is one of many CNOR certified nurses who facilitate such a program.  Several instructors like Zander are busy hosting the two-day, CNOR exam preparation courses across the country.  While CCI is not affiliated with and does not officially endorse any exam preparation course, it does promote courses like Zander’s on its website in the Prepare for the CNOR Exam area.

Recently, CCI has seen a growing trend of facilities and Chapters hosting CNOR certification preparation courses.  Many nurses find this method of study helpful as it is guided by an instructor.  There is, of course, typically a fee associated with attending these courses.

Realizing that the cost might be an obstacle for many potential attendees, Wallenborn wrote a grant request to the Mission Healthcare Foundation, asking for full funding for 30 nurses from Mission Hospital to participate in the prep course.  Although Wallenborn had never written a grant before, her experience as a volunteer on different nonprofit Boards in in her community gave her a baseline of knowledge about the process.

Wallenborn explained, “I have learned how important it is in grant writing to understand what the criteria are for funding and emphasizing how the money awarded would meet the Foundation’s goals. I also remember that many foundations have a surplus of money that they want to award, and they are just waiting for someone to ask for it.”

She continued, “I didn't really expect 100% approval, but decided that I might as well go for it.  Surprisingly, the request was approved, and we had 34 nurses from Mission Hospital register for the course.”

This means that along with the 30 nurses originally anticipated for the course, four other nurses had become engaged, and the Foundation approved funding for them as well.  The only stipulation for the grant was that the nurses who received it had to take the CNOR exam within six months of the course.

The two-day CNOR exam preparation course was hosted on April 21 and 22, 2012 and had 45 total attendees.  It was a resounding success for Wallenborn’s AORN Chapter, raising almost $3,000.   Mission Surgical Services even showed its support by sponsoring breakfast one morning for course participants.

Wallenborn admits that since her facility was already working on achieving Magnet status, it was easier to gather financial support from the Foundation.  Regardless of this factor, Wallenborn recommends seeking out guidance within your facility to see what financial support options are available.

“Talk to someone, possibly in your education department, who has experience planning education events in your area.  They may be able to point you in the direction of resources you are unaware of,” she said.

Also, forming a planning committee is something Wallenborn strongly recommends, recounting that her own planning committee was “small, but dedicated”.

Of course, having a sponsor for the course can dramatically increase the net income from the event.  But if that option is not available, successful planning strategies can ensure that course participation would be strong enough to warrant the initial expense.

“I would do the homework and survey the nursing staff of facilities or AORN Chapters in the area to gauge for interest in such a program.  I sent out an informal survey by email to all of the nurses in Surgical Services at Mission Hospital, inquiring about interest in taking a CNOR prep course,” explained Wallenborn.

Also, exploring different courses and facilitators will help ensure each person finds the right fit for their timeline and budget.  CCI offers a list of known course presenters with whom it typically interacts.

Mission Hospital is hoping to apply for Magnet status by the fall of 2013.  The facility continues to offer support for the nurses hoping to take the CNOR exam by reimbursing the exam fee once they pass the exam.

National ASC Day 2013 will take place on Thursday, August 15, 2013. Events sponsored by ASCs provide an excellent opportunity to acquaint policy makers, the residents of your community and local media to the facility and the benefits that ASCs provide.

In the past, ASCs have conducted a broad range of activities, including health fairs, facility tours and media briefings, in recognition of National ASC Day. Over time, these events have educated thousands of people about the high–quality, cost-effective care that ASCs provide.

National ASC Day 2013 provides the ideal opportunity for ASCs to demonstrate their value to policy makers and the public,” noted ASCA Chief Executive Officer William Prentice. “ASCs are often the first choice of doctors and patients because they offer outstanding surgical care while also providing convenience, cost savings and a comforting environment where highly skilled staff and physicians put patients first.”

ASCs interested in sponsoring an event on National ASC Day should contact Morgan Hanson.
